The back of the picture says 2005.
That year marked the very first teen trip to Romania for the church where I grew up. It was a foundational moment, setting the stage for a legacy of service, faith, and cross-cultural relationships. After that initial trip, the church continued sending groups every three years, creating a cycle of commitment and ministry that lasted until staff changes and the global interruption of Covid brought a pause to their travels.
As I look at this picture, it’s more than just faces and names. It’s a story of growth and transformation. Many of those pictured have gone on to serve in a variety of fields: ministry, the medical profession, real estate development, and even the entertainment industry. What stands out most is not just their professional accomplishments, but the way so many continue to walk faithfully with Christ, living out their faith in everyday life. Their journey is a testament to the lasting impact of those formative summers in Romania.
I have countless memories from that group. They were not just fun to be around; they were deeply committed to their mission. Their exceptional service and willingness to go above and beyond left an impression on everyone they met. The friendships and bonds formed during that summer have endured the test of time, serving as a constant reminder of what it means to serve together for a greater purpose.
This summer, I am thrilled to welcome a family from this same church to join me in serving at one of our camps in northwest Romania. It’s incredibly meaningful to see the connection of service continue, linking generations and building on the foundation established years ago. My hope and prayer for this summer is that it will be an impactful time for the youth who are making the sacrifice to come. May they continue investing in the relationships they began last year and deepen their understanding of what it truly means to serve others.
As we look back and celebrate three decades of ministry, this picture also reminds me of the special book we are producing in honor of our 30th anniversary. We would still love to hear from you!
